Testing your soil is the first, and most often overlooked, step a homeowner should take when landscaping their home. The ph of your soil significantly determines how efficiently your lawn absorbs and processes fertilizer. WLS recommends AT LEAST conducting an at home do-it-yourself ph test. However, these tests are NOT guaranteed to give you the most accurate or reliable results. For more accurate results, we recommend a professional test be done on your soil. This can be done through your local county extension office. They should provide you with a sample box to collect your soil sample and data sheet for what you will be planting to have sent off to a lab for testing. The lab results should include recommendations on what you need to apply to your soil and the proper amounts. This small investment up front could potentially save you time and money by avoiding wasteful over fertilizing.
